The POST Project - Introduction

The goal of the POST (`Programming with the OpenMP Standard') project is to enhance FORESYS (a development support, quality assurance and FORTRAN 90 migration tool) with an automatic parallelisation component dedicated to the OpenMP shared memory programming standard. The enhanced product will be marketed by SIMULOG on a global basis.

The OpenMP aware automatic paralleliser in FORESYS will allow users with little or no parallel programming experience to benefit from the new standard with a minimal learning investment, as automatic source code transformation will relieve the programmer of the details of how to parallelise a given loop.

The project will also develop a range of interactive features to support users who are migrating codes to OpenMP or a combination of OpenMP and MPI. Alternative programming models will be explored by the researchers in the project.

The POST environment will be evaluated by several application developers who will each migrate industrially relevant FORTRAN codes to SM-DM platforms, including both workstation clusters and large-scale platforms. They will cooperate to specify the desired functionality in detail, will provide continuous feedback to tool developers during the project, and will use the environments to create parallel applications under OpenMP-MPI.

The POST project is funded as project 29920 of the European Union ESPRIT program.
